UW–Madison Campus
The UW–Madison campus carries more live music per square mile than almost anywhere else in Madison. The anchor is the Memorial Union complex on Lake Mendota: the Wisconsin Union Directorate (WUD) Music Committee books and promotes shows every weekend at Der Rathskeller and the Terrace, and at Union South's The Sett. Beyond themed weekends, the Terrace runs four nights of free live music weekly, most of the year, with warmer-month performances at the lakeside stage and cold-weather shows moving indoors to Der Rathskeller. The Madison Jazz Festival culminates each year with free concerts at the Terrace and Shannon Hall. Shannon Hall, part of the Wisconsin Union Theater, seats 1,165 and is led by a student committee whose season includes music, touring dance, and theater. The campus's formal concert anchor is Hamel Music Center, which opened in 2019 as a nexus of musical activity for the Mead Witter School of Music, with its two halls hosting faculty and student ensembles, touring performances, festivals, and guest artist concerts. The building features a 661-seat concert hall and a 314-seat recital hall, used for approximately 350 events annually. Mills Concert Hall remains an additional School of Music performance space. Camp Randall Stadium, through the new "Live at Wisconsin" platform, has become a destination for major concert events. Bar-side options include Mom's Bar, Whiskey Jacks Saloon, Ruby at Liquid, and The Annex at The Red Zone Madison, rounding out a campus neighborhood where formal concert halls and casual bar stages coexist within a few blocks.
