University Research Park
A neighborhood in Madison
University Research Park sits about three miles west of the UW-Madison campus and is primarily a technology and research district. Its live-music options reflect that mix of workaday west-side neighborhood and nearby campus energy. Otto's Restaurant & Bar, open since 1987, occupies a restored 1870s stone farmhouse on Mineral Point Road. The restaurant specializes in Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, fresh seafood, and Certified Angus steaks, with a lower-level bar that draws a regular west-side crowd. Memorial Day through Labor Day, live jazz runs Tuesday through Thursday evenings on the canopy-covered deck, with music programming extending from April through October. Wando's Bar & Grill has been open since 1994 as a three-story sports bar and grill on University Avenue. The boisterous, tri-level space runs DJs and dancing and calls itself the "Home of the Fishbowl and Birth Place of Jump Around." The first floor stays casual with games and screens, the second floor serves as social space, and the third floor is home to the DJ and dancing. Taken together, the two venues offer a clear split: a quieter, reservation-recommended jazz-on-the-patio experience at Otto's, and late-night DJ-driven nightlife at Wando's.
