Midtown

Midtown Memphis stretches roughly three miles east of downtown, spanning the Overton Square, Broad Avenue, and Cooper-Young districts, and its live-music range runs from a 90-year-old outdoor amphitheater to a dive bar lit entirely by lamps. The Overton Park Shell, built in 1936, presents free outdoor concerts in the heart of Midtown and has been voted the #1 best place to see live music in Memphis for 11 years running. On July 30, 1954, Elvis Presley performed there in what music historians call the first-ever rock and roll show. The Orion Free Concert Series brings free outdoor shows every summer and fall. Named a "Memphis music institution" by NBC News, Minglewood Hall is a century-old former bread factory with dual performance spaces holding 1,600 and 400 people. The main stage draws national touring acts across genres, from hip-hop to indie rock and country, while the attached 1884 Lounge hosts local and regional music in a more intimate 400-capacity setting. B-SIDE Bar, opened in 2019 inside the Minglewood Plaza building at 1553 Madison Avenue, focuses specifically on promoting live Memphis music, with blues, rock, and soul on the bill. Each set is live-streamed and features the performer's tip handle. The Lamplighter Lounge, one of the oldest bars in the city and a Midtown staple, is lit entirely by lamps and books drag shows, songwriter sets, comedy, karaoke, and live bands, with an LGBTQ-friendly crowd.
