South Main Arts District
The South Main Arts District sits in downtown Memphis, and its live-music options run from nationally recognized dive bars to a hotel lounge built around a record collection. On the last Friday of each month, Trolley Night brings free MATA trolley service up and down Main Street, with open galleries and extended hours for most area shops and restaurants, and South Main Sounds draws music activity on those nights. Earnestine & Hazel's, on S. Main Street, has been featured in nine movies and is considered one of the most haunted places in America; upstairs, a piano player and live bands play soul, jazz, and blues. Many patrons also come just to listen to the jukebox, filled with classic Memphis soul and funk. Eight & Sand, inside the historic Central Station hotel, is a bar and lounge home to a Memphis-inspired vinyl collection and a state-of-the-art sound system. All the music played there is either recorded in Memphis, by Memphis artists, or about Memphis. Curated playlists and live DJs anchor most nights. South Main Sounds is a casual, intimate gallery in the district that regularly hosts singer/songwriter nights for both up-and-coming and established musicians.
