Downtown Milwaukee's live-music anchor is the Bradley Symphony Center at 212 W. Wisconsin Ave., built on the bones of the former Warner Grand Theater, with its 1,650-seat Allen-Bradley Hall serving as the permanent home of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. A few blocks away on the Milwaukee River, the Marcus Performing Arts Center at 929 N. Water St. has hosted performing arts, community, and family events since 1969. Resident partners there include the Florentine Opera, Milwaukee Ballet, First Stage Children's Theater, and Black Arts MKE. Within the Marcus Center, Uihlein Hall is the home of the Broadway at the Marcus Center touring series, while Peck Pavilion features floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the Milwaukee Riverwalk and is used for smaller performances and community events. Rounding out the downtown scene, St. James 1868 occupies a Gothic-revival church built in 1867, with stained glass windows and renovated interiors that frame Candlelight Concerts featuring live string-quartet performances of artists like Taylor Swift, Queen, and Beyoncé, as well as a concert series with Milwaukee musicians performing tributes to Prince, Billy Joel, Elton John, and more. Downtown's live-music character is largely formal and seated, with classical, opera, Broadway, and intimate tribute concerts leading the calendar.
