Historic Mitchell Street

A neighborhood in Milwaukee

Historic Mitchell Street, on Milwaukee's south side, evolved from deep Polish roots into a neighborhood with a strong Hispanic character. Its live-music history runs through the now-dormant Modjeska Theater, where music lovers once flocked to see acts like the Dismemberment Plan, Descendents, and Guided by Voices in the '90s and early aughts. Today the street's dedicated music venue is MKeUltra. A DIY performance space and recording studio run by musicians, it sits at 1535 W. Mitchell St., just blocks from where the empty Modjeska still stands. MKeUltra runs multiple shows a week and welcomes acts of all sounds and styles, in a room with a maximum capacity of 49 and a wood-floor stage set before a red curtain. By mid-2025 the venue was hosting about 15 shows a month, and it has since added recurring DJ nights and monthly art gallery nights. The venue supplies a backline drum kit and guitar and bass cabinets free of charge to performing acts. Tickets typically run $10–$15, and shows are all ages, 21+ for alcohol.
