Silver City

A neighborhood in Milwaukee

Mamie's Bar and Grill, open since 1981 at 3300 W. National Ave., is Silver City's one dedicated live-music room, and it runs on blues. Every Friday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m., Mamie's books live blues, drawing both local and out-of-town performers. There is no cover charge for these shows. Tuesdays bring open mic night, and the bar's music history runs deep: notable blues acts including the Charles Walker Band and Reverend Raven have played here regularly. For a small tavern, Mamie's also holds some of Milwaukee's biggest neighborhood outdoor parties, including a Silver City Day cookout in June with live bands and an October "last hurrah" featuring blues and R&B bands that draws around 600 people. Located in what is considered one of Milwaukee's most diverse neighborhoods, Mamie's draws an equally varied crowd in terms of race, age, and background. Silver City's live-music life is essentially contained within this one corner bar, and Mamie's makes that count.
