A neighborhood in Nashville
Across the Cumberland River from downtown Nashville, East Nashville draws the city's creative class and has built one of the densest live-music corridors in the area, concentrated around Five Points and Riverside Drive. The Basement East, opened in April 2015, has hosted a wide range of nationally touring acts including Beck, Brandi Carlile, Cage the Elephant, Luke Combs, and Yo La Tengo. Known locally as "The Beast," it holds around 400 people and books shows seven nights a week. The 5 Spot, an independent venue operating since 2003, hosts live music seven nights a week and runs roughly 150 bands a month. Its Monday night Motown party is a neighborhood institution, and the booking ranges from indie rock and funk to soul and R&B. The 5 Spot gained national attention when Lady Gaga chose it as the first stop on her 2016 dive bar tour. The Cobra leans into its identity as a dingy, divey east-side club, hosting rock acts where Nashville artists share songs and road stories. The East Room is a low-key spot for rock, indie, and experimental music that also programs live comedy and theater. The neighborhood's other venues, from Grimey's record shop and Skinny Dennis to brewing spots like East Nashville Beer Works and Living Waters Brewing, fill out a scene where a folk-and-indie tradition going back to the 1960s and 1970s still informs the independent spirit of the area today.
