Shaw

A neighborhood in St. Louis

Shaw is a walkable south St. Louis neighborhood where live music tends to happen outdoors in green spaces or at close-knit neighborhood bars rather than at dedicated concert halls. The two main music spots reflect that character well. Gallery Pub on Thurman (4069 Shenandoah Ave.) is a family-run neighborhood pub with gallery space for local artists and a dedicated stage for live music. Music runs several nights a week, with jazz at the core of the booking but other genres in the mix as well. The room holds 50 inside, with another 50 on the patio. Stone-fired pizza and local art rotating every few months round out the experience. Missouri Botanical Garden (4344 Shaw Blvd.) anchors the neighborhood's biggest recurring music event: the open-air Whitaker Music Festival, which presents free Wednesday evening concerts under the stars each summer. Lineups draw primarily local artists across jazz, blues, folk, bluegrass, and rhythm and blues. More than one million people have attended over the course of the festival's run, making it one of the most attended free music series in the St. Louis area.
