The Hill
A neighborhood in St. Louis
The Hill is St. Louis's Italian American neighborhood, known far more for its restaurants and close-knit community than for nightlife. Live music here is concentrated in a single spot: Pop's Blue Moon on Pattison Avenue. The bar was built with lumber salvaged from the 1904 World's Fair, and the wood found a second life on Pattison Avenue, becoming the bones of a neighborhood tavern that endured through Prohibition and two World Wars under three generations of the Gianella family. In 1999, Terry and Josh Grigaitis bought the bar for $100,000 and renamed it Pop's Blue Moon, keeping the history and adding the music. Music started when Josh recruited friends for Monday-night sessions to boost business. After moving to Tuesdays, the night quickly became the busiest of the week, bands came in for jam sessions, and the place packed. Gigs eventually got booked six nights a week: bluegrass one night, rock the next, hip-hop, jazz, Americana. The room holds about 40 seated (75 or so standing), and the best shows fill every inch. Pop's sits on the quieter, I-44-cut-off side of The Hill, which only adds to its character.
