University City
A city in the St. Louis area
University City is best known for the Delmar Loop, a stretch along Delmar Boulevard recognized for its restaurants, music venues, and theaters. The one listed music venue within city limits leans decidedly toward the formal end of the spectrum. The 560 Music Center was built in 1930 as the Shaare Emeth Temple and later served as home to the Saint Louis Conservatory and School for the Arts. Washington University took possession in 2006, and the renovated building contains three performance spaces that can accommodate solo recitals to full orchestra concerts. The main hall, the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall, seats 1,115 and is home to the WashU Symphony Orchestra, with programming that also includes faculty recitals, Saint Louis Symphony performances, and visiting artists. A 75-seat Recital Hall in the same building is used frequently for student recitals and master classes. Outside organizations book the space as well: St. Louis Classical Guitar has presented solo guitar recitals in the E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall, and the Missouri Chamber Music Festival brings nationally recognized professional musicians to the venue each June.
