Columbia Heights
A city in the Minneapolis & St. Paul area
Columbia Heights is a first-ring suburb just north of Minneapolis, and its live-music life runs through a small number of anchors. The city itself runs a free outdoor concert series: the Music in the Park series holds its shows at Huset Park East, from 6:30 to 8 pm each summer evening. The annual Columbia Heights Jamboree is a summer highlight that includes live music along Central Avenue. The one dedicated indoor music venue is Rail Werks Brewing Depot, a craft brewery and BBQ spot on Central Avenue. Its programming is recurring and genre-varied. First Thursday Jazz Night is a monthly fixture, with Don Strong and Thom West playing smooth jazz and improvisation in the taproom. On the third Thursday of every month, a K-pop night runs from 5 to 9 pm, open to longtime fans and casual listeners alike. Attendees perform choreographed dances they learned from YouTube and TikTok. Sunday nights bring Bachata Nights, with DJ Mixtape spinning Bachata, Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue, and Kizomba. Live rock acts, such as Rockin' Woody, also take the stage for no-cover sets. Rail Werks charges no cover for most events.
