Dinkytown is a compact commercial district within the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood, centered at 14th Avenue SE and 4th Street SE, sitting alongside the University of Minnesota campus. In the late 1950s, a young Bob Dylan roamed its streets in the early days of his journey toward folk music, and that history still colors the neighborhood's identity. The two main music venues here serve very different scales. The Varsity Theater was built in 1915 as one of the city's last vaudeville houses and is now a general admission Live Nation room. Set near the University campus, the Varsity blends historic charm with excellent acoustics and books an indie-to-rock lineup that also includes comedy shows. Artists such as Janelle Monaé, Brandi Carlile, and Mumford and Sons have played there. Northrop, formally the Cyrus Northrop Memorial Auditorium, is a performing arts venue on the University of Minnesota's East Bank campus. A renovation reduced its main-theater seating to 2,692 and improved sight lines and acoustics. Its programming includes contemporary ballet, ethnic dance, a jazz series, and a summer festival of free music concerts. The hall also houses the largest pipe organ in the Upper Midwest.
