Marcy-Holmes
A neighborhood in Minneapolis
Marcy-Holmes sits in the University community of Minneapolis, and its live-music scene is shaped almost entirely by that proximity. Many University of Minnesota students live on the neighborhood's eastern side, and the one dedicated music venue here reflects that student base directly. The Whole Music Club occupies the basement of Coffman Memorial Union on the University of Minnesota East Bank campus. Founded in 1960, it began as a coffeehouse where students performed and studied, then grew into a venue offering local and national acts at affordable prices. Renowned for presenting up-and-coming performers cheaply, its history includes names like Sleater-Kinney, Tom Waits, Atmosphere, Har Mar Superstar, and Cloud Cult. Today, the club hosts Gigs: Student Sound each fall, spotlighting University performers, and runs a Battle of the Bands each spring, with the winning band earning a slot at Spring Jam. The room seats up to 119 and holds an 18-by-14-foot performance stage. It is an all-ages venue.
