Downtown

First Avenue and 7th St Entry are two historic music venues housed in the same landmark building in downtown Minneapolis. The building was constructed in 1937 as a Greyhound bus depot and converted into a nightclub in 1970. The main room, with a 1,550-person capacity, hosts over 200 concerts a year, while the 7th St Entry, at 250 capacity, hosts over 350 concerts annually. First Avenue appeared in Prince's 1984 film Purple Rain, with many of the film's performances taking place at the venue. The 7th St Entry has become nearly as legendary as a launching pad for bands that would go on to play much bigger rooms, like the Replacements, Hüsker Dü, and Soul Asylum. On Nicollet Mall, the Dakota opened in 1985 and expanded to national artists by 1988, moving to downtown Minneapolis in 2003. Artists who have played there include Patricia Barber, Roy Hargrove, McCoy Tyner, John Scofield, and Joshua Redman, among many others. Orchestra Hall, also in the heart of downtown, is a nationally recognized destination for classical music fans. The Orpheum, State, and Pantages Theatres anchor the downtown theater district and regularly host touring productions and concerts. The Skyway Theatre adds a mid-size rock and electronic show option. Rounding out the map are bars and clubs including Hell's Kitchen, Bar Fly, Prohibition Bar, REV Ultra Lounge, Roxy's Cabaret, The Saloon, and the rooftop option at Union Rooftop, covering everything from late-night DJ sets to cabaret-style entertainment.
