A neighborhood in Chicago
Northalsted, also known as Boystown, is the oldest officially recognized gay neighborhood in the United States. Its music and nightlife run along N. Halsted St., with the sound skewing toward DJ-driven dance floors and music-video bars rather than live bands. Sidetrack is the bar that put Boystown on the map. The massive multi-room video bar has been a neighborhood anchor for over 40 years, with seven distinct rooms, each with its own bar and wall-to-wall video screens. Show tunes run three nights a week: Musical Monday (8pm–2am), TGIFriday (4–9pm), and Sunday Funday (3–9pm). The dance floor runs Wednesday through Sunday until 2am (Saturday until 3am). No cover on regular nights. Hydrate opened for Pride Weekend in 2003 and quickly developed a national and international reputation for bringing top DJs to Chicago. The booth features a rotating lineup of DJs spinning high-energy house, pop, and dance. The stage hosts weekly drag shows and special guest performances. National and international DJs hold down Fridays until 4am and Saturdays until 5am. Beyond the two venues, the annual Northalsted Market Days street festival fills a half-mile stretch of Halsted with all-day live music across four stages, alongside vendors, drag performances, and dance exhibitions.
