Uptown
A neighborhood in Chicago
Uptown was a booming nightlife district in the 1920s and 1930s, with a jazz scene that took off during Prohibition, and the music never really stopped. The neighborhood's anchor is the **Green Mill**, a staple of Chicago's jazz scene and a former speakeasy dating to 1907, making it one of the oldest continuously operating jazz clubs in the country, with live jazz every night from sultry singers to big band and bebop. The Green Mill also hosts a poetry slam every Sunday that launched the competitive spoken-word movement in 1986. The **Aragon Ballroom**, opened July 15, 1926, features an interior designed to resemble the courtyard of a Moorish castle surrounding a 21,000-square-foot dance floor. One of the most respected rock venues in the country, it has hosted Metallica, Smashing Pumpkins, and Nine Inch Nails, and accommodates up to 4,873 guests. The **Riviera Theatre** is a local staple with a glitzy red marquee, booking rock and pop headliners alongside up-and-coming local acts, with original vintage ceiling frescoes and chandeliers still intact. **Carol's Pub**, established in 1972, is the go-to spot for country music, live performances, and high-energy karaoke nights. Of the honky-tonk bars created during Chicago's post-war southern migration era, only Carol's still stands, and house band Diamondback achieved legendary status playing there. The Dock at Montrose Beach, Le Nocturne Chicago, and Uptown Lounge round out the neighborhood's live-music options.
