Over-the-Rhine

Over-the-Rhine sits on the north edge of downtown Cincinnati and holds one of the densest concentrations of live-music venues in the region, running from world-class classical institutions to free-every-night pub stages. Cincinnati Music Hall, constructed in 1878 and a National Historic Landmark, is home to the Cincinnati Opera (the nation's second-oldest opera company), the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra (the nation's sixth-oldest), the Cincinnati Pops, and the May Festival, the longest-running choral festival in the Western hemisphere. Its halls have hosted performers from Ella Fitzgerald to Yo-Yo Ma. Next door, Memorial Hall OTR books a wide range of genres, with past acts including Esperanza Spalding, the Robert Cray Band, and Molly Tuttle. On the bar-and-club end of the spectrum, MOTR Pub opened in 2010 with a focus on live, original music in OTR and has since hosted roughly 5,000 live events featuring bands and songwriters from around the world. The venue features live music seven nights a week with no cover. Its sister venue, the Woodward Theater, sits directly across the street and takes on larger productions. Several acts have made the jump from MOTR's smaller stage to the Woodward's larger one. Schwartz's Point Jazz & Acoustic Club and Revel OTR Urban Winery also draw live-music crowds, and Washington Park, next to Music Hall, offers an event lawn used for live music and festivals. The neighborhood's mix of a 2,000-seat landmark hall, a mid-size historic performance room, a no-cover nightly pub stage, jazz lounges, and an outdoor park stage gives OTR a live-music range matched by few Cincinnati neighborhoods.
