King-Lincoln Bronzeville
King-Lincoln Bronzeville was the heart of an affluent African American business and entertainment district in the 1930s and '40s, and its live-music identity runs deep. The renovated Lincoln Theatre sits as a landmark to African American and jazz history and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The 582-seat venue on E. Long Street once regularly presented artists including Nancy Wilson, Count Basie, and Cab Calloway, and reopened with its art-deco design restored in 2009. The King Arts Complex, which produces concerts, exhibitions, and festivals that highlight African American cultural contributions, anchors the neighborhood alongside it. At street level, Canabar on E. Long Street books live bands on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, and runs a jazz brunch on the first two Saturdays of the month. Lincoln Cafe is a cozy soul-food restaurant and coffee shop that doubles as an event venue, hosting live music and open mic nights.
