Downtown Columbus anchors the city's performing-arts calendar through three historic theaters that together keep the calendar dense. The Ohio Theatre, a 1928 movie palace and National Historic Landmark, puts on more than 100 performances a year; it is home to the Columbus Symphony, BalletMet, and Broadway in Columbus. The Palace Theatre, a 2,827-seat house at the base of the LeVeque Tower designed to resemble the Palais de Versailles, originally opened as a vaudeville stage and now hosts touring musical artists, comedians, dance companies, and local arts organizations. The Southern Theatre, one of the oldest surviving theaters in Ohio, has been open since 1896 and today presents dance, music reviews, and other art-focused events. Outdoor music fills the warmer months along the Scioto Mile. The Bicentennial Pavilion at Columbus Commons opened in 2012 as a permanent covered stage and has hosted acts ranging from the Columbus Symphony Orchestra to Tower of Power. Columbus Commons itself offers a mix of free and ticketed concerts, including family-focused options. Bicentennial Park runs a summer Friday concert series through Columbus Recreation and Parks, with DJs, live music, and food trucks. Bars, lounges, and smaller rooms round out the neighborhood's offerings on evenings when the big stages go dark.
