Eastern Market

A neighborhood in Detroit

Eastern Market is a Detroit institution famous for its barbecue, soulful music, and lively Saturday gatherings. The neighborhood's music scene is anchored by Bert's Marketplace and its related Bert's Entertainment Complex on Russell Street. The nearly 30,000-square-foot complex includes a restaurant serving barbecue and soul food, live jazz in the Warehouse Theater and Jazz Room, and a museum honoring Detroit's Black history. Live Jazz runs Thursdays and Fridays, Blues on Saturday nights, and Open Mic Night on Sundays. The Thursday night jam sessions have run for a decade, non-stop, and many feel they had a place in reviving the city's jam session scene. Dearing has also employed the Funk Brothers, the famous Motown backing band, keeping them working between tours. Eastern Market Brewing Co. and The Shadow Gallery round out the neighborhood's options, with The Shadow Gallery offering craft cocktails and rooftop views. The district also runs First Wednesdays, an open-air series from July through September where the area comes alive from 6 to 9 PM with music, food, and art.
