The Sounding Room: Zekkereya El-magharbel
Ambient · Jazz · Electronic
Midtown punches well above its size as a live-music neighborhood. The Majestic complex on Woodward anchors the rock and indie end of the spectrum: the complex includes The Majestic Theatre, The Magic Stick, and The Alley Deck, and draws touring artists with niche and cult followings. The Magic Stick started hosting bands in the 1990s after owners removed bowling lanes to add a dance floor, and the space suits garage, alt rock, and electronic acts. A few blocks away, the Garden Theater is a restored historical live-music and entertainment venue originally designed by C. Howard Crane in 1912. Converted from a single-screen movie house, it features vintage Art Deco architecture and intimate seating, with programming that spans concerts, comedy, and cultural events. On the quieter end, Café Sous Terre shifts from a daytime cafe into an evening bar, serving French-inspired food and cocktails alongside regular live jazz and curated vinyl DJ sets. It occupies a basement space in an 1890s Midtown mansion. MOCAD offers live music from unexpected songwriters set among contemporary art. Griot Music Lounge brings a vinyl-focused, intimate room that leans toward jazz, soul, and global sounds. The Max M. & Marjorie S. Fisher Music Center is home to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Little Caesars Arena handles arena-scale touring acts. The range across these twelve venues covers everything from a basement jazz set to a 20,000-seat arena floor.
