A neighborhood in Indianapolis
Butler-Tarkington's live-music identity runs on two very different tracks: the formal concert halls anchored to Butler University's campus, and a long-running punk bar a few blocks away. Clowes Memorial Hall anchors the Butler Arts & Events Center, with 2,148 seats and a presenting history going back to 1963. Resident companies include the Indianapolis Opera, and Broadway in Indianapolis brings touring productions to the stage. A step down in scale, the Howard L. Schrott Center for the Arts, completed in 2013, seats around 475 and pairs a full-size proscenium stage with acoustics and sightlines optimized for music, dance, and theatre. It serves as the primary home for the Butler School of Music, Butler Theatre, and Butler Ballet. Shelton Auditorium, a 400-seat Greek-style theatre on Butler's South Campus, rounds out the campus options. The Tobias Theater at Newfields, also within the neighborhood, adds another programmed performance space tied to the art museum campus. On the bar end, the Melody Inn on Illinois Street has been open since 1935 and is a go-to for punk rock. Punk Rock Night runs every Saturday, alongside open mic nights, blues, and hillbilly happy hour.
