University of Louisville

A neighborhood in Louisville

The Speed Art Museum, Kentucky's oldest and largest art museum, sits on South Third Street adjacent to the University of Louisville's main campus, and serves as the neighborhood's primary live-music destination. A 2016 expansion added a multi-functional pavilion designed specifically for performances, lectures, and entertainment, giving the museum a proper live-music footprint. Every third Friday, the Speed stays open until 10 p.m., with each After Hours event pairing live music and performances with a bar and food. These nights can include live music, cash bars, art-making activities, and special gallery access, turning the museum into an evening destination. The Speed hosts concerts across a wide range of genres. Outside of the regular After Hours series, the museum's programming calendar also includes concerts alongside exhibitions, gallery talks, and film festivals. For a neighborhood defined by a research university, the Speed functions as the main anchor for after-dark cultural events, drawing both the campus community and broader Louisville audiences into its galleries and performance spaces.
