A neighborhood in Madison
Marquette / Willy Street, Madison's near-east side neighborhood, packs more live music into a 10-block corridor than almost anywhere else in the city. Venues here cover rock, blues, folk, jazz, and other sounds. The anchor for jazz is Cafe CODA, Madison's premier jazz space, owned by jazz legend Hanah Jon Taylor, offering an up-close listening experience with bar and food options. Arts + Literature Laboratory is a community-driven contemporary arts center running over 200 events per year, including live music, city-wide jazz events, and theater. ALL has hosted artists ranging from Marc Ribot and Tarbaby to Ryan Davis & The Roadhouse Band. Audio for the Arts is primarily a recording studio but hosts a live concert series called Acoustic Moose in its live room, presenting artists to an intimate audience of roughly 30 people. Taverns including Crystal Corner Bar, Gib's Bar, Mickey's Tavern, Weary Traveler Freehouse, and The Wisco fill out the bar-based end of the scene. The neighborhood also anchors Madison's outdoor festival calendar: of the city's five principal free music festivals, four are held in Marquette.
