Cultural District
Pittsburgh's Cultural District spans 14 square blocks in the heart of Downtown, anchored by seven theaters all managed by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. The programming is weighted toward formal, ticketed performances rather than bar-style live music, but the range is real. Heinz Hall, the most opulent of the three, dates to 1927 and has been home to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra for decades. From classical to pop and musical guests, it covers more ground than its formal setting might suggest. The Benedum Center was built in 1928 as the Stanley Theatre, then renovated and reopened under its current name in 1987. The 2,800-seat house is home to PNC Broadway in Pittsburgh and also provides priority dates to Pittsburgh CLO, Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, and the Pittsburgh Opera. The Byham Theater, the smallest of the three at 1,300 seats, began life as a vaudeville house and was renovated and reopened in 1990. Today it programs a wide variety of performing arts including dance, music, theater, film, and family-friendly events.
