McKees Rocks
McKees Rocks, on Chartiers Avenue about 15 minutes west of downtown Pittsburgh, anchors its live-music identity around one address: the Roxian Theatre Presented by Citizens. The Roxian originally opened in 1929, then closed and sat empty for years before undergoing renovations and reopening for performances in early 2019. It holds around 1,400 people, comparable in size to Mr. Smalls, and was completely gutted and modernized from its former life as a movie theater into a venue built around sound and lighting. All seating and standing room is general admission. The room has hosted electronic, indie, rock, and punk shows. Current booking also includes metal, country, pop, and folk. Regionally, the Roxian was designed to attract acts that would otherwise bypass Pittsburgh by filling a gap in the mid-size venue market.
