North Oakland

North Oakland's live-music identity rests almost entirely on one large-format venue. The Petersen Events Center, commonly called "the Pete," is a 12,508-seat multi-purpose arena on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. Its end-stage concert configuration seats around 9,000. The arena is home to Pitt basketball and hosts many touring concerts throughout the year. Ticketing listings show a wide genre spread, with concerts spanning rock, pop, hip-hop/rap, country, and R&B. Beyond the Pete, the neighborhood has little dedicated live-music infrastructure. Live music returned to Oakland only recently, close to 20 years after the Upstage, described as the last great Oakland venue, shut its doors. For residents, the Pete is the neighborhood's one consistent source of ticketed, touring-act concerts, pulling national and international names to what is otherwise a college district with few small-club options.
