Shadyside
Shadyside's bar-driven music scene faded in the 1990s when rising rents pushed clubs off Walnut Street. Today the neighborhood's main dedicated live-music spot is Rea Coffeehouse, a campus venue with a distinctly DIY character. Marked by graffiti-covered walls and located in the basement of one of Chatham's residence halls, it draws students from Chatham and beyond for free shows from local indie bands. A four-student Coffeehouse Committee handles booking and runs the space as one of Chatham's most popular on-campus venues. Beyond regular band nights, the Coffeehouse also hosts Chatham Palooza, a collaborative fundraising event featuring live music. It is a free, community-oriented room rather than a commercial club, so visitors outside the Chatham community should check the university's events calendar for show dates.
