Bloomfield
Bloomfield sits in Pittsburgh's East End, known as Pittsburgh's Little Italy, and its live-music identity is anchored by two Penn Avenue venues with very different personalities. Brillobox, at Penn and Main, uses its second floor as a cultural space for live music alongside DJ dance parties, art events, spoken word, fundraisers, variety shows, and screenings. The room holds around 150 people. On any given night you're likely to find a local punk band or touring rock act in its intimate concert space. Brillobox reopened in early 2022 after a closure. A few blocks up Penn Avenue, the Mr. Roboto Project is a DIY nonprofit volunteer-run cooperative venue that has been at 5106 Penn Avenue since fall 2011. It is all-ages and sober. Shows are primarily booked by local bands and promoters, and while a wide variety of styles are represented, many fall under the banner of punk. The venue focuses on hardcore, midwest emo, nu-metal, and rock. Its structure was modeled partly on the 924 Gilman St club in Berkeley. Walls are plastered with pop-up art from featured artists, giving the space a gallery feel alongside the shows.
