Maplewood

A city in the St. Louis area

Maplewood's dedicated live-music anchor is The Focal Point, a nonprofit listening room at 2720 Sutton Blvd. Beloved by St. Louis' musical community since 1975, it offers performers and audiences an intimate experience seldom found in the region's larger venues. The venue has built a reputation for presenting roots and acoustic music from local, national, and international artists. It seats roughly 300 people in a one-room storefront, with the stage at the back and no bad seat in the house. Audiences, volunteers, and fiscal backers keep it running with a calendar that spans bluegrass, folk, jazz, and international musicians. Beyond its more than 100 concerts a year, the space hosts free Sunday afternoon Morris dancing, Thursday international folk dancing, Irish dancing on the first and third Mondays, and the monthly Songbird Concerts singer-songwriter series. Past performers have included Chris Smither, Henry Townsend, Norman and Nancy Blake, and Mike Seeger. Downtown Maplewood also hosts the annual Stringfest, which brings live string music to the streets of Historic Downtown Maplewood, and the Taste of Maplewood street festival, which features live music on two stages in the heart of downtown.
