Macalester-Groveland is a relatively quiet neighborhood without a nightlife-driven music scene, but it has a genuine anchor for performed music on its campus grounds. The O'Shaughnessy, on the campus of St. Catherine University, is one of the Twin Cities' premiere arts venues and has presented local and national performing arts companies since opening in 1970. It quickly became a coveted venue for orchestras, chamber ensembles, and modern music, and today hosts musicians, dance companies, and theater companies who praise its performance space and acoustics. Its annual programming centers themes of social justice and women's voices, alongside university events and community presentations. Recent music programming has included concert-theater crossovers, such as a show combining jazz and storytelling with Broadway repertoire drawn from the Great American Songbook. More broadly, the neighborhood's arts life ties into its trio of universities, with Macalester, St. Catherine, and St. Thomas all hosting performances year-round.
