Fleshpots of Egypt: Hymntap

A neighborhood in St. Paul
Midway, strung along University Avenue between the two downtowns, holds more live-music options per block than almost any other St. Paul neighborhood. The Turf Club anchors the strip: originally a supper club and dancehall that opened in the 1940s, it is now operated by First Avenue and, at 350 capacity, runs an upstairs stage and bar alongside a cozy basement bar and stage called the Clown Lounge. It books live music nearly every night, drawing both neighborhood regulars and touring artists. A few steps away, the Midway Saloon, established in 1892, pairs live music and community events with an extensive selection of 200-plus whiskeys and 50-plus beers. Music runs multiple nights a week, spanning blues jams, bluegrass, local original acts, and touring bills. At the large-format end of the spectrum, Allianz Field launched its first Great Lawn Concert Series in summer 2026, bringing tribute bands to the stadium for standalone outdoor shows. The neighborhood also holds Sundin Music Hall at Hamline University and the Buetow Music Center Auditorium, two campus performance spaces that host classical and academic programming, plus Ginkgo Coffeehouse for quieter acoustic sets, and The Black Hart of Saint Paul and The Dubliner Pub for Irish-leaning and bar-floor music.
