A neighborhood in Chicago
Beat Kitchen has anchored Roscoe Village's live-music calendar since 1994, operating out of an 1889 building whose back room was once a neighborhood butcher shop. Touring and local musicians, comedians, and artists take the stage nearly every night, covering every genre. Ongoing residencies include Chicago Underground Comedy, a Bluegrass Brunch, and Concerts for Kids. The music hall runs about 1,600 square feet with a capacity of 275 standing. Hungry Brain closed suddenly in December 2014, then was brought back by Mike Reed, who also owns and books the nearby experimental-leaning Constellation. The bar kept its cheap beer and a jukebox filled with deep cuts, along with performances from Chicago's experimental jazz scene. The low-lit room offers retro furnishings and arcade games, with programming that spans open jam sessions, indie singer-songwriters, and electronic sets. The calendar leans heavily into improvisation and avant-garde sets. It is open Friday through Sunday only. Beyond the two venues, Retro on Roscoe takes over Roscoe Street every August as a multi-day festival of live music and local food.
