Downtown

Downtown Indianapolis covers a wide range of live-music formats, from historic concert halls to small jazz bars, all within walking distance of Monument Circle. Hilbert Circle Theatre, on Monument Circle itself, is the home of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. Built in 1916 as a movie palace, it now anchors the neighborhood's classical programming. Old National Centre, which first opened in 1909 as the Murat Temple, features nine event spaces including the Murat Theatre, the Egyptian Room concert hall, and the intimate Deluxe room. The complex includes a 2,600-seat performing arts theatre, a 1,800-seat concert hall with a banquet room, and a 600-seat multi-functional room. The Murat once hosted Ella Fitzgerald, Ray Charles, and a young Stevie Wonder; more recently the venue books acts like Twenty One Pilots, Neil Young, and Wilco. At the intimate end, Chatterbox Jazz Club is a tiny 900-square-foot bar in the Mass Ave cultural district, known for its dive aesthetic and live music. It has presented live, local jazz for over 28 years. The Rolling Stones once played an impromptu set in its narrow digs. Beyond these anchors, the area also holds country, blues, and rock bars, a rooftop lounge, brewpubs with stages, and outdoor event plazas, giving Downtown Indianapolis live music at nearly every scale.
