North Side

Madison's North Side carries its own music identity, separate from the downtown club corridor. The three venues here cover different ground without much overlap. Bierock is a comfort food restaurant and bar by day that turns into a local music club at night. Live music runs on Fridays and Saturdays, with no cover charge. The venue hosts a recurring first-Friday residency from Mudroom, a local jam band that played its 400th show at Bierock in February 2026. Mudroom draws from Phish and the Grateful Dead while also playing original funky, jazzy material. The Locker Room Sports Bar on Roth Street is a North Side third-shift bar with live music, pool, and darts. Thursday nights are "Bootleg Night," where patrons bring in a bootleg recording from any band and receive a free domestic beer. Lola's Hi/Lo Lounge, at 617 N. Sherman Avenue, is a music-themed concept from hospitality veterans Matt Gerding, Tori Gerding, and Evan Dannells, offering listening sessions and DJ performances several nights a week through a purpose-built high-fidelity sound system. Monday nights feature DJs spinning Motown, Stax, and Northern Soul; Thursdays are Global Grooves night, with DJs playing Latin, Afrobeat, French disco, and other international styles. A recurring Jazz Kissa-style event presents legendary albums played start to finish through the HiFi system.
